I met Robert Pooley when I was Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle and we immediately hit it off. When he came into our house, he was horrified at the state of my telescope, presented to me by The Queen in 1966! He took it away and refurbished it back to its pristine state and at the same time asked my wife and I to visit Pooley Swords in Shoreham-on-Sea and to bring my sword. We went and were so impressed by the quality of the work, the dedication of the team, the pride in all they do and the old-fashioned commitment to excellence. This all comes from Robert’s enthusiasm and knowledge of all things to do with the swords of the many nations that his company supplies, as well as all the armed forces of UK. When I arrived in Robert’s office, he took one look at my sword and said you have the wrong scabbard. I replied I got it from Gieves in 1968. “You are an admiral now; you should have and admiral’s scabbard and your sword needs some work doing on it!” I had no idea there was an admiral’s scabbard but was very happy to be given a new correct one. My sword was later returned looking immaculate, re-gilded, cleaned and in its new scabbard.

Pooley’s Swords is a very special company that does everything to perfection and represents the skills and craftmanship that can be found today but is far from common. Robert is a very special person who instils the best values of British Industry in his people and relates so well to all his customers from whatever nation. I commend both Robert Pooley and Pooley’s Swords most highly. What a perfect combination!

There are not enough words that can truly convey the privilege it is to own a Pooley Sword. When I received my Cavalry Sabre, it took my breath away as I just stared at it for what seemed to be an eternity. The precision, the craftsmanship, the passion and love that has gone into it is not something you can appreciate until you see one with your own eyes, a still photograph will never be able to give it justice.

It is more than just a Sabre, for me and my family, it is an heirloom, an incredible piece of history that will be passed down from generation to generation. History is made not just from deeds and acts alone, but of incredible artefacts such as Swords and Sabres as this one, that I am proud to own.
